Améa was created from a simple belief: skincare doesn’t need to be complicated.
We believe in fewer, better products. Carefully chosen ingredients. Thoughtful craftsmanship. Something people reach for every day, rather than another jar that sits forgotten on a shelf.
That belief began in the North West of Ireland.
Améa grew from the place we call home. Founded by Bernie, a mother of four, it takes its name from a letter of each of her children’s names, a quiet reflection of its roots in everyday life.
On our family land in North Leitrim, nettles grow wild and undisturbed, just as they always have. Every harvest is picked by hand, by three generations of one family: Bernie’s father, now 88, who has worked this land all his life; Bernie; and her children, who are learning the same hills. Long part of everyday life here, nettles have been valued for generations, yet today they are often overlooked.
Looking for a simpler approach to caring for dry skin, Bernie began to question the ingredients in the skincare she was using and what she was putting on her skin. She returned to her farming roots, exploring the plants growing wild across the family farm.
From there, Améa began. Nettle infusions were made at home in small batches, becoming part of daily life, shared with family, refined over time, and gradually developed into something worth building on. As the formulations evolved, work with cosmetic chemists and experienced manufacturers brought the products to a professional standard, while staying true to the original idea.
From the beginning, the aim was never to create another skincare routine. It was to create versatile products people could reach for again and again, for the face, the body and everyday dry areas, reducing the need for multiple products.
We choose to be slow
The nettles are cold-infused over weeks, not hours. Our products spent years in development, not months. We would rather do a small number of things properly than many things quickly.
Bernie is a solicitor by profession, and that background shaped Améa from the very beginning. Doing things properly has never been optional. Before a single product was launched, every formulation underwent independent cosmetic safety assessment and laboratory efficacy testing, including research with the Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (CABR), Atlantic Technological University and specialist laboratories in the UK, together with the regulatory assessments required under the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Each product has been notified through the European Cosmetic Products Notification Portal (CPNP).
Doing things properly isn’t a slogan. It’s how Améa was built.
Treading lightly
Our nettles grow wild on a certified organic farm, without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, and travel no further than our own production unit. We harvest by hand, make in small batches to avoid waste, keep our ingredient lists short, and package in dark glass that can be recycled or reused. None of this is complicated. It's simply how you care for a place you intend to hand on.
At the centre of everything is nettle, gently infused and combined with a small number of carefully chosen ingredients.
Améa is our belief that skincare can be simpler. That doing things slowly still matters. And that the products we reach for every day should be made with care, honesty and respect for where they come from.
